Coffee no Seki with Akari Karugane

Artists with whom we share a connection—and galleries both at home and abroad—come together to create moments of coffee and sweets. We also host an exhibition of artists here at Kurohime. Experience the ambiance of those moments, the people you can only meet in that place, the fleeting instants as time shifts, the utensils crafted for coffee and sweets, and the display arrangements. We present these records.

Coffee no Seki with Akari Karugane

Coffee no Seki
 Co-curator: Akari Karugane

While our usual Coffee No Seki features works by various artists, antiques, or natural objects, this time we have composed the setting almost entirely with her works.

She traveled between our respective homes to explore the form, creating ceramics specifically for these four days—a kettle, a brazier, an alcohol lamp, and more.

My wife, who handles the sweets, layered the colors of local ingredients onto the canvas spread across the plate of the late Akari Karugane.

The coffee room dotted with her pieces felt like a galaxy with various planets floating within it.

Each time a piece designed for a specific coffee was introduced, everyone was delighted. Many guests actually tried using the pieces themselves on the spot, envisioning how they might fit into their own lives, which made us very happy.

May time flow gently and last a long while with each of you.
